Organisational structure

The Institute of Marine Biology and Genetics (IMBG) is one of the five institutes of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). It is based on the premises of HCMR in Crete (Thalassokosmos).

 

IMBG was officially established in 2003 by the presidential decree 164/2003, which also established HCMR by merging the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete (IMBC), with the National Center for Marine Research (NCMR). Most of its personnel and infrastructure come from IMBC.

 

The scientific object of the IMBG, according to the presidential decree is “the research and technological developments mainly in the fields of biodiversity, structure and dynamics of ecosystems, ecosystem management, genetics of marine organisms, the search for new or improved products and organisms, as well as the authentication and origin identification of organisms and their products”
