Abstract | In this review, we are providing all available information on the molecular phylogeny of the genus Barbus sensu lato. The number of chromosomes indicates whether each species originated as diploid (50), tetraploid (100), or hexaploid (150) fishes. This is considered the primary parameter of classification. Only the "true barbs," which are the European, West Asian, and North African tetraploids, are discussed in the text species by species. Special care is taken to provide an accurate phylogeny of the European species. The main conclusion reached through the molecular studies is that it is necessary to limit the genus Barbus to the "true barbs" and to give different generic names to all other taxa originally included in Barbus sensu lato |
