Abstract

Three rheophilic species of western Palaearctic Barbus are recognised in the Danube River basin, each diagnosed by a set of unique mitochondrial DNA alleles. The three species are parapatrically distributed and morphologically similar to each other. The redescribed B. petenyi, from the Eastern and Southern Carpathians and Stara Planina Mts., is distinguished by a short, sharply pointed snout. Barbus carpathicus, new species, from the Western and Eastern Carpathians, is distinguished by a long, sharply pointed snout. Barbus balcanicus, new species, from the Dinaric Mts. and Western Stara Planina Mts., is distinguished by a short, bluntly pointed snout, and a unique body and fin colour pattern..
