Description: 

Messara Bay is located in the south coasts of Crete and comprises an important fishing ground for the recruitment of red mullet (Mullus barbatus). The study of this ecosystem is considered to be necessary as it suffers from pollution mainly due to urbanization and agriculture (fertilizers, pesticides, etc.).
